they used to save his life, ahead this morning. >> you're watching kcci eight news. >> there will be people along the way who try to undercut your success. eric: also this morning, taylor swift swipes back at the naysayers with her acceptance speech at last night's grammy awards. who won, who lost, and who outdid themselves with their performances, ahead. eric: good morning and welcome back, it is tuesday, february 16. elizabeth: you might want to step carefully as you head out this morning. rainy weather out there could make slick spots. metinka: we have rain and snow across central iowa tracking to the south and southeast. the back edge of the precipitation is back through ames and carol. it has just been a cold rain but we do have patches where we have snow mixing and and some freezing rain.

sidewalk, the parking lot, and maybe some gravel roads in the country will be slick early on today. all of this will be moving out by 9:00 or 10:00 a.m. across des moines and closer to noon. heading for highs pretty similar to temperatures we're seeing now in the mid-30's. improvements are around the corner. eric: you will notice slick spots out there on your drive this morning, shaina humphries is here. what are the latest conditions right now? shaina: we have been out on the roads in the des moines metro area, we can tell you the main roads are fine so far. the cold rain really coming down just a short time ago, a few side streets are slick, along with parking lots and sidewalks. that temperature hovering just above freezing most of the night. giving you a live look now outside, our downtown skycam on the left, i-80 at jordan creek on the right. people are moving right along.

but a wintry mix in other areas. statewide road conditions are changing a little bit, showing a few trouble spots in central iowa but things are a little slick. if you are just posted on our facebook page from marshalltown to bondurant is a sheet of ice. thank you, look for that. we have more than 30 school delays. no closures yet but keep an eye on kcci.com to find out more about that. right now, people in century, florida are cleaning up after this tornado tore through town. a 94-year-old woman was trapped inside her home and a tornado just destroyed it. about 10 homes were destroyed and tens of thousands were left without power. reports of serious injuries.

turning to the latest in the ongoing conversation about the supreme court. president obama could announce his pick to replace justice antonin scalia as soon as next week. the president and his advisors are weighing their options on who to nominate right now. some names that have been brought up are attorney general loretta lynch, homeland security chief jeh johnson, as well as several federal judges, including judge jane kelly from cedar rapids. elizabeth: new details in an officer-involved shooting in urbandale. authorities have identified the man urbandale police shot and killed saturday as 29-year old ali yahia. urbandale police have released few details, but say officers were called to the holiday inn on a drug complaint around 4:00 a.m. saturday. when they arrived, they say yahia fired a shot and officers fired back and killed him. sgt. gary lang: it's such an involved case. i know they are still working really hard on it. after the grand jury i know a lot of stuff can come out, will come out. but until them unfortunately we can't disclose a lot of that.

criminal history. kcci has learned authorities have had 253 interactions with him in polk county since 2006. trust kcci to follow this story as it develops. when the investigation is complete, authorities will turn over everything to the polk county attorney who will most likely call on a grand jury. in the meantime, the three officers, officer anthony brooks, officer justice weaver, and sgt. jeff casey will remain on administrative leave. eric: two fishermen are being called heroes this morning, after saving the life of an indianola man at lake ahquabi sunday. officials say richard rauzi was taking wildlife pictures when the ice underneath him broke. two ice fisherman heard his cries for help and rushed across the lake to his rescue. damian bell went in with a canoe, placing a tie strap around richard's waist, who was motionless, and barely conscious. the dnr says a likely tragedy was averted, thanks to the quick action by the two ice fishermen.

ice fishing that day, he wouldn't have stood a chance. i mean, he wouldn't have made it. there's no doubt in my mind that he wouldn't have made it. eric: richard is recovering in a local hospital. dnr officials tell kcci they plan to nominate the two ice fisherman for the governor's lifesaving awards program. elizabeth: the bus driver charged with running over and killing an iowa state university student will go on trial april 5th. 23-year-old benjamin clauge entered a written plea of not guilty monday in a story county courtroom. ames police charged clague with running over 18-year-old emmalee jacobs with a cyride bus near campus in december. we will be there later today when the iowa supreme court holds a special evening session. to hear a case that involves the estate of late slipknot member paul gray, and his former doctor daniel baldi. gray died of a drug overdose back in may of 2010. gray's estate filed a lawsuit against baldi, but a lower court threw it out, the estate says that court made a mistake and wants the iowa

prosecutors charged baldi with involuntary manslaughter in connection with gray's death, but a jury found baldi not-guilty. eric: a hearing is set for today in decorah in the murder trial of alexander fazzino. fazzino is charged with first-degree murder in the 2012 death of his wife emily fazzino, daughter of fareway ceo richard beckwith. it's not clear what today's hearing is about, but we have learned that the winneshiek county sheriff is requesting additional security for the trial, which is set to begin on monday. also happening today. the iowa dot is holding a public meeting on some proposed changes to the busy i-35 highway 30 interchange in ames. the dot wants to make the interchange safer by creating a flyover ramp, which is like a bridge over the current ramp. you can give your opinion on the project today from 5:00 to 6:30 p.m. at crossroads baptists church in ames.

in february you want to grab an umbrella but you might want it. metinka: we have a bit of a sloppy mess with cold rain for des moines and freezing rain mixing in and that times wet snowflakes. very colorful radar pictures in central iowa with the back edge of precipitation through marshalltown and ames and almost carry. there are just a few flurries left over. knoxville will be getting precipitation for several more hours and the latest road condition map has central iowa a little bit pink which means partially ice covered meaning school delays across the bottom of your screen. we expect rain, snow, freezing mixture to last through 9:00 a.m. and through noon near a, -- ottumwa. elizabeth: in case you missed it, the 58th annual grammy awards took place last night right here on kcci. the world's biggest stars came together to celebrate the year in music. here are some of the big winners. ed sheeran was awarded song of the year for his hit "thinking out loud." meghan trainor took home the

record of the year was awarded to mark ronson and bruno mars for "uptown funk." and taylor swift won album of the year for "1989." we'll have more highlights from the grammy awards later on in the show. eric: and sports news now, the latest ask about a people -- basketball ap poll is out, and both iowa and iowa state are still doing well in the national ranking. the hawkeyes are holding steady at number four in the nation. the iowa state cyclones went up slightly, from number 14 to number 13. the top team in the country is still villanova, followed by kansas and oklahoma. so the big 12 has two teams in the top three, and an impressive six teams in the top 25. iowa state will take on one of those ranked rivals tonight. the cyclones are on the road in waco, texas to take on the 25th ranked baylor bears. tipoff is tonight at 8:00 p.m. you can watch it on espn 2. and while you will see senior jameel mckay back on the court after his suspension, coach steve prohm says it's deonte burton who will get the start again tonight.

>> this is iowa's news leader. this is kcci 8 news this morning. with eric hanson, elizabeth klinge, meteorologist kurtis gertz, and right-now coverage with shaina humphries. metinka: good morning, we have a wintry mix this morning with cold rain and freezing rain and some snow all through central into southern iowa. the back edge extends from marshalltown through ames all tracking to the south and to the southeast. southern iowa will be getting this freezing mix of precipitation for the next several hours. the -35 and it has been a cold rain event.

it will be moving out of the state by around noon time and the wind will pick up and temperatures today will stay cool but then they will turn the corner and workup for the end of the week. if the winter temperatures or metinka's forecast have you dreaming of summer, you might want to go to california. they're in the middle of a record-breaking heat wave right now. the national weather service says it was 89 degrees in downtown la monday, and even hotter further south. orange county saw temperatures in the mid 90's. meteorologists say the record high temperatures are expected to stick around for the rest of the week. and pope francis is heading to a hotspot of drug violence in mexico today, as the next stop in his tour around the country. he is expected to speak to about 50,000 people during an event this afternoon. on monday, he visited with families in chiapas, where he had this touching moment with a teenager who suffers from muscular dystrophy. the pope will visit juarez on wednesday, just across the border from el paso, texas. elizabeth: new this morning.

longer just millennials who care about what they're eating. kcci's alyx sacks met with local farmers to see how they are keeping up with the clean food trend. alyx there's a growing demand for less processed, more organic food. what does that mean for iowa famers? alyx: elizabeth, farmers and ag experts say they're evolving with the times. recently, major food supplier smithfield foods has joined the likes of kellog, general mills, and campbell's to start having the food they use sustainably grown. matt carstens: ways they can insure they are doing the right thing, but it also helps meet the needs of what consumer's are looking for. there are a lot of tools available for what they need. not only does it help the environment it also helps what people are looking for. alyx: matt carstens is the vp for united suppliers and works on the sustain platform. carstens says sustain is economically feasible and is proven to be better for the environment.

the sustainably tactics. now it's about educating the public. and making sure consumers know they are using best practices to grow food. boyd brodie: our farm customers are very much stewards of the land and their difficulty has been how do we approach the consumer? how do we let the consumer know the things we are doing and the things we're interested in and i think this provides that mechanism. alyx: so have you noticed the labels? some say organically grown. some say all natural. now, some are starting to say sustainably grown? what's the difference? we'll carve into that at 6:30. eric: economic headlines now. wall street reopens today after the president's day holiday. friday was a winning day for markets. the dow closed up more than 313 points. the nasdaq added more than 70. and the s&p 500 finished up more than 35. several automakers are expanding their recalls when it comes to

six foreign and one american car maker are adding vehicles to the recall, including bmw, ford, honda, and volkswagen among others. for a full updated list of makes and models affected, go to safecar.gov. gas prices continue to fall. and while that has many americans celebrating, some industries are getting hit hard, including the recycling business. wayne defeo: all recycling is impacted by low energy costs, plastic in particular because plastic is made from oil. with oil prices so low, plastic makers are finding it cheaper to make new plastic from oil instead of from recyclables. some experts say the price drop in oil is costing recycling centers around the country billions of dollars, but they say you should keep recycling because it's better for the environment and prices will eventually go back up. elizabeth: the popularity of e-books like the kindle made a lot of people think bookstores would be a thing of the past. but that may not be the case.

rose by 2.5% last year. that's the first increase in sales for that industry since 2007. the e-book trend may be fading, their sales were down last year, as print sales went up. something about holding the book. eric: that freezing line is right there. metinka: it is, that's why we have seen the wintry mix. it's not too far away. here it is on live super doppler, all tracking to the south and southeast. we are back in two the precept from marshalltown through ames dropping near perry and pandora. we have an hour or two left should last late until knoxville and sheraton. it has been quite the mixed bag, just cold rain in des moines. our roads are just wet. out there.

winterset had a slushy snow with accumulation. you might have to scoop that off the sidewalk this morning or wait until it melts later this afternoon. temperatures have been flirting with freezing across central iowa from fort dodge north of the line. it is cold in the 20's across northeast iowa, otherwise southwest iowa has seen rain overnight. precipitation will attract the southeast so that by 9:00 a.m. it should've cleared the metro area, continuing close to ottumwa heading out by noon. we have fog trying to settle in, but visibility's are not that bad. it will be a cool one today with highs mainly in the 30's. tomorrow some 40's creed in and notice what happens toward thursday. the map looks more springlike with 40's, 50's across iowa with

we will see a few snowflakes mixing in from time to time that will move out by men -- noontime. tomorrow it could be kind of a foggy day as well. then changes in the air with a huge springlike warm-up for the end of the week. highs in the 50's close to 60 on friday and warmer temperatures will stick with us through the weekend, melting away any slushy get. shaina: things are looking pretty good, we are getting reports of slipperyy sidewalks. keep in mind, certain areas of central iowa will see slippery roads. there was some snow on the road in winterset, keep that in mind. we have a number of mobile speed units. this one on the east side of 2300 hull avenue. and a few blocks north of hoover

where the candidate stepping eric: welcome back. commitment 2016 this morning, the next contests in south carolina and nevada are just days away and the candidates are getting down and dirty. elizabeth: nikole killion is live in washington with the latest campaign clash, plus new poll numbers. nikole, what do they show? nikole: as many of the candidates slog it out today in south carolina, a new poll shows donald trump running away with the lead as he takes on his closest rival. the survey by public policy polling shows donald trump with 35% support in the palmetto state, compared to 18 for ted cruz and marco rubio. while jeb bush is in single digits. looking to rebound, bush brought out his brother, former president george w. bush and his wife laura.

and cruz is only intensifying as the real estate mogul threatened to take cruz to court. donald trump: we will bring a lawsuit if he doesn't straighten up his act out, he's a lying guy , a really lying guy, some people misrepresent this guy is a plan out liar. ted cruz: it's an amazing thing, have you noticed how rattled donald gets when his numbers start going down. he gets very, very upset. nikole: trump says he'll sue cruz over his eligibility to serve in the white house unless cruz stops running false ads and apologizes. elizabeth: let's talk more about former president george w. bush. this was his first appearance for jeb on the trail. will it help? nikole: that's what jeb bush is banking on. keep in mind that they have some pretty deep political and personal connections down there in south carolina. george w. bush and his father

elizabeth: good morning and welcome back. eric: about an hour ago we had a couple of school delays but now we have 39 across the bottom of your screen because the road conditions in some area are slick. shaina: i don't think any of us in des moines had two heart of the time. elizabeth: i had one little slide at a stop sign. metinka: there is a glaze on the en untreated and gravel roads. across central iowa we have the mixture with cold and freezing rain and snow. this is all tracking to the south. the back edge is moving through the ames area through perry. across southern iowa, he will be dealing with it until probably close to noontime. 35 now in des moines, our roads are wet but depending on where you live, temperatures will be a

it will be a slushy afternoon as things melt again with gusty wind building and in the 30's. shaina: we want to give you a look at what's happening downtown. cold rain is falling during the overnight with temperatures staying above freezing so no ice to deal with on the main roads. you might notice slick spots on sidewalks and driveways so be very careful when you're walking around. checking out statewide road conditions, we are sitting to see more color pop up. areas that were green are now partially covered and you see something to the south meeting roads are completely covered. if you are in one of those areas you will need extra time. we have viewers writing and about trouble spots. travis says i-35 south of des moines is slush covered. luke wrote us about icy conditions on highway 330. both of them say 40 miles per

we have 40 school delays as well so we will keep the ticker up on the bottom of your screen. meanwhile we have more video in from stormy south. tornadoes hit alabama, mississippi, and florida. in century, florida, people had to use a chain saw to cut through debris and free a trapped elderly neighbor. more than a dozen homes in florida were damaged or destroyed. the tornadoes were part of a large winter storm system that also hit the east coast with snow, sleet, strong winds and rain. and the back-and-forth over -- check out these live pictures over houston, texas. this is an apartment complex on fire. the woman who lives there says the fire started in one apartment and within 15 minutes it had spread to the entire complex. we do not know the cause and have not heard of injuries but this is still an active seen for firefighters. eric: moore big stories in central iowa. urbandale police say body cameras will play an important role as they investigate a sgt. gary lang: i know there is so it will be a whole part of the process.

victim as 29-year-old ali yahia. officers were called to the holiday inn on merle hay road on a drug complaint early saturday morning. kcci has learned authorities have had 253 interactions with yahia in polk county since 2006. the three officers involved in the shooting are now on paid administrative leave. elizabeth: the iowa supreme court plans to hold a special evening session tonight for the estate of late slipknot member paul gray. gray's estate says a lower-court made a mistake when it threw out their lawsuit against former doctor daniel baldi. they ruled that gray's wife could not sue because she missed the 2-year deadline. prosecutors charged baldi with involuntary manslaughter in connection with gray's death, but a jury found him not guilty. gray died of a drug overdose back in may of 2010. a boone man is set to go on trial next week in the death of his wife. alexander fazzino is charged with killing emily fazzino in

the trial has been moved from boone to decorah. the winneshiek county sheriff wants extra security in the courtroom. a hearing is set for today. eric: loud voices are speaking out in trainer in western iowa demanding the school superintendent resign. a group of parents came together and they are circling a petition asking kevin a wood step down saying he put students in that district near council bluffs at risk by hiring his own son as a school janitor. he is a registered sex offender. he was suspended for 30 days and ordered him to go through ethics training. but some parents say that's not enough. others stood in support of him. >> we do not feel comfortable leaving the safety of our daughter to the school system and we have no confidence in superintendent elwood. >> my hope this evening is to call on both sides to forgive and move on and to unite together. eric: superintendent elwood told our sister station that he would be available for comment later

elizabeth: more studies show that seemingly everyone is on board with better food. the environment. kcci's alyx sacks is looking at how this trend impacts local examples? alyx: we're used to seeing "organic" labels at the grocery store. now we're seeing "sustainably grown labels." sustain as a platform farmers say is safe for consumers and the environment and it's more economically feasible. matt carstens: the mere fact is that we won't be able to feed 8, 9 billion people doing it organically. alyx: so what does it mean to be organic? they are grown without sin that it -- synthetic fertilizers, sewage sludge, genetically modified organisms, or ionizing radiation. for meat, poultry and dairy, means animals do not take antibiotics or growth hormones. some suggested is impossible to produce all the food that's demanded without some help.

performances on the grammy awards, right here on kcci. of great attributes. -- tributes. the 58th annual awards did not disappoint, great show last night. shaina: teri okita with the night's big winners, and moments everyone will be talking about today. teri: pop queen taylor swift opened the 58th annual grammy awards and ruled the show, winning the top prize. swift's "1989" earned the singer her second career grammy for album of the year. she urged young women to not let naysayers get in their way. taylor swift: you just focus on the work, and you don't let those people sidetrack you. teri: mark ronson and bruno mars' "uptown funk" won "record of the year". braille. nah, nah, nah, nah, nah. of the year" nominees before announcing ed sheeran's "thinking out loud" the winner. and "best new artist" meghan trainor couldn't hold back tears as she thanked her family. meghan trainor: and my mom and dad for always believing in me. teri: this year's grammys

metinka: it is a cold rain in des moines but not too far away. we have snow mixing and and freezing rain falling across central iowa from ankeny through des moines. winterset still getting snow through sheraton over toward ottumwa. we are getting reports of the streets and everything being coated with freezing rain and road conditions are beginning to go downhill across the southern parts of the state. our roads in des moines are just what with a cold rain overnight and temperatures above freezing. 35 in des moines but maybe just a little slippery as the glaze collected. winterset had snow overnight and slushy it can relations. we have been watching plows go through but folks seem to be doing fine. the latest map showing across south-central and southeast iowa, roads are reported as slush covered. make sure you have extra time to get where you're going.

tomorrow will be a foggy, quiet day with highs in the 30's but 50's are on the way thursday and possibly close to 60 degrees on friday. it will feel fabulous and melt away any slush. eric: be careful out there, ames police said some side streets are completely ice covered. shaina: right here in the metro it is pretty good with just rain but we have heard people going out to walk their dogs and finding the sidewalks are slippery. be careful, particularly south the metro. we are seeing more snow and slush out there making things slippery. we just have some mobile speed units you want to keep an eye out for. 2300 hull ave. 4500 south union street. 4500 50th street.
